What is a pallet?A pallet is a flat platform, often made of wood, plastic, or metal, used as a base for storing, handling, and transporting goods. Pallets provide stability for goods during movement and are typically lifted by forklifts, pallet jacks, or other machinery equipped with forks. They are widely used in warehouses, distribution centers, and manufacturing facilities for efficient storage and transportation of goods. Pallets come in various sizes and designs, with standard dimensions established to facilitate compatibility across different handling systems and transportation modes.
-
Why should my business use pallets?Pallets offer several advantages in storage, handling, and transportation processes. Most notably, pallets offer efficient storage in warehouses, facilitate transportation of goods, offer easy handling with equipment, and enhanced protection against product damage. These advantages from pallets collectively contribute to streamlining supply chain processes, improving efficiency, and reducing operational costs. Bottom line, pallets allow for safer and more efficient handling of goods during storage and transportation, while providing standardized and simplified logistics operations.
-
What are pallet grades?A wood pallet grade refers to a classification system used to categorize pallets based on their quality, condition, and suitability for various applications. The most common wood pallet grades you will hear are Grade A and Grade B. Grade A Pallets are in excellent condition, with minimal or no damage. They are typically new or nearly new and free from defects such as broken boards, protruding nails, or structural issues. Grade A pallets are suitable for high-value or sensitive goods and often command a higher price. Grade A pallets can still be repaired, but repairs would be considered minor. Grade B pallets may show signs of wear and use, such as minor damage, repaired boards, or superficial blemishes, but they are still structurally sound and suitable for most general-purpose applications. Grade B pallets are commonly used for shipping and storage in various industries. These pallets have usually had stringers repaired or replaced.
-
What is a 48x40 wood pallet?48x40 wood pallets are the industry standard pallet size, measuring 48" (L) x 40" (W) x 5.5" (H). These pallets are commonly referred to as GMA pallets (Grocery Manufacturers Association), and are among the most widely used pallet sizes in the United States, not just for Grocers but for many industries. Renowned for their efficient load bearing capacity, ease of storage and transportation, and compatibility with most forklifts and pallet jacks, 48x40 pallets have become the standard pallet size in the U.S. serving various industries.
-
What does the average pallet weigh? While it depends on a number of different factors, the average weight of a standard 48x40 pallet is 32 lbs.
-
Why wooden pallets instead of plastic pallets?Wood pallets can be customized to fit a business' specific needs, whether it be size or load-bearing requirements, wooden pallets offer versatility and flexibility that plastic pallets can't provide. This is especially evident when transporting heavy or dense products because wooden pallets generally have a higher weight capacity than their plastic counterparts. Wood pallets also tend to be more cost-effective due to lower manufacturing, repair, and replacement costs, which is advantageous for budget-conscious businesses or those with high pallet turnover. From an environmental standpoint, wooden pallets are the clear winner. They are considered sustainable as they can be recycled, repaired, and repurposed, aligning with businesses' sustainability commitments.
-
What are heat-treated pallets?Heat-treated pallets, often abbreviated as HT pallets, are wooden pallets constructed of lumber subjected to a heat treatment process to meet international standards, most notably the ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15). The high temperature kills any insects, larvae, or other organisms that may be present in the wood, reducing the spread across borders. Pallets that have been properly heat treated are typically marked with a stamp or label indicating compliance with ISPM 15 standards. Pallet Bros. is certified to provide heat-treated pallets under compliance with ISPM 15 requirements. We are audited and certified annually by third-party inspectors to provide heat-treated pallets (HT pallets) for export in accordance with the most current ISPM 15 requirements.
-
Do I need heat-treated pallets?Heat treatment is mandated by U.S. customs under the ISPM-15 program, so heat-treated pallets should be used when you need to transport goods across international borders or when you want pest-free packaging. Heat-treated pallets are also more durable and built to withstand the toughest environmental conditions, ensuring your packaging remains secure during transit.
-
How do I know my pallet has been heat-treated?When a wooden pallet is made of heat-treated lumber, the pallet manufacturer is required to clearly and legibly stamp their unique unique operator number on the outside of the stringers on two opposing sides of the pallet. This mark typically includes the country code, the treatment code (HT for heat treatment), and a unique identification number.
-
